These big T shirts began to appear in all the capitals of Europe towards the end of the 16th century, constituting a real revolution in the shirt-stomach relationship (SSR) and enabling those with wider girths to wear their shirts without fear of bursting seams, unceremonious popping off of buttons or the sudden, embarrassing exposure of the navel.

The 17th century saw the advent of the extra large T-shirt, usually in plain but striking colors such as mauve, emerald green, willow and birch. At that time it was not yet customary to stick heat transfer patches on the T-shirts, mainly because it was still the 17th century and there were no thermal adhesives yet - not to mention the fact that were wasn't much of a selection of pictures of motorbikes, superheroes, machine guns and the like either!

With the invention of the Marines, Top Gun pilots, frogmen, eXtreme sportsmen, sexy singers and so on came the big boom in the mid-20th century, making extra large T-shirts a common sight among the abdominally challenged.
